This volume is a comparative study of linguistic categorization and „ma-thematical categorization" - the set theories. The merits of five major mathematical set theories are examined in order to establish which one better matches the linguistically-coded human categorization with its well documented features of prototypicality, membership gradience and psychological prominence of the basic-level categories. The results indicate that one of the five theories - mereology - reflects the features of the linguistic categories much more closely than other mathematical set theories. This close connection of mereology, the most elegant and the only paradox-free among mathematical set theories, with human catego-rization adds to the growing body of evidence that mathematics, instead of being a lofty Platonic ideal, is a product of the human mind. Niniejszy tom jest porównawczym studium kategoryzacji językowej i "kategoryzacji ma-tematycznej" - teorii zbiorów. Zbadano zalety pięciu głównych teorii zbioru matematycznego w celu ustalenia, która z nich lepiej pasuje do zakodowanej językowo kategoryzacji ludzkiej z dobrze udokumentowanymi cechami prototypowości, gradientu przynależności i znaczenia psychologicznego kategorii poziomu podstawowego. Wyniki wskazują, że jedna z pięciu teorii - zwykła teoria - odzwierciedla cechy kategorii językowych znacznie dokładniej niż inne teorie zbioru matematycznego. Ten ścisły związek mereologii, najbardziej eleganckiej i jedynej wolnej od paradoksów spośród teorii zbioru matematycznego, z ludzką kategoryzacją dodaje coraz więcej dowodów na to, że matematyka, zamiast być wzniosłym ideałem platońskim, jest produktem ludzkiego umysłu.
